St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) - Research suggests that St John's Wort works in a similar way to standard antidepressant medications, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), by increasing the availability of the brain chemicals serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters help improve mood.
Lemon Balm (Melissa off.) - Lemon Balm has a significant anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect. It raises brain levels of the neurotransmitter Gamma Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) analogue by inhibiting the enzyme GABA transaminase. This has an effect on mood regulation. GABA reduces the excitability of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain, which play a role in calming excited neurons.
Hawthorn Berries (Crataegus oxycanthoides) - Studies indicates that Chlorogenic acid (CGA) and Hawthorn Berry extracts prevented depressive behavior and thereby have potential as natural antidepressants. Oxidative stress has been implicated in mental disorders, including depression. CGA, one of the abundant phenolic compounds in herbs and fruits, has the properties of a natural antioxidant and free-radical scavenger and is found in Hawthorn Berries.
Kava Kava (Piper methysticum) - Kava Kava is in the pepper family that grows in the Pacific islands. Pacific Islanders have traditionally used kava in ceremonies to bring about a state of relaxation. Kava is said to elevate mood, well-being, and contentment, and produce a feeling of relaxation. Several studies have found that kava may be useful in the treatment of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and related nervous disorders.
Ginger Root (Zingiber off.) - The main therapeutic strategy in the treatment of depression and mood disorders is the modulation of the monoamine system. Since neurotransmitters (dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin) are metabolized by monoamine oxidase (MAO), the inhibition of the enzyme may increase their brain concentrations and thus reduce disease symptoms. Ginger root contain terpenes which inhibit the MAO-A enzyme activity.
